Could CO2-induced changes to C4 grass flammability aggravate savanna woody encroachment?

چکیده
Fire plays an important role in maintaining the savanna tree-grass balance by limiting recruitment of heat-sensitive tree seedlings. However, fire behaviour may change under increasing CO2 concentrations, due to altered flammability grassy layer. Here, we determined effect predicted future and how it interacts with water-availability, on grass traits influential flammability, uncovered physiological mechanisms underpinning these responses. Using widespread C4 grass, Themeda triandra, as a model, found that improved water-use efficiency elevated (800 ppm) resulted larger (greater aboveground biomass), but wetter (higher moisture content) fuel load, cured at slower rate drought conditions. These changes were associated increased time ignition, reduced flaming times spread. We modelled national level (South Africa), finding large-scale reductions spread CO2, mitigating converse effects increases aridity, marginal fireline intensity. CO2-induced frequency, or intensity could have serious implications for vegetation dynamics, possibly exacerbating woody encroachment already seen ecosystems across world.

Biogeochemical Changes Accompanying Woody Plant Encroachment in a Subtropical Savanna
Ecosystem properties of surficial (0–10 cm) soils in remnant herbaceous patches were compared to those of contrasting woody plant patch types (upland discrete cluster, upland grove, and lowland woodland) where shifting land cover is known to have occurred over the past 50–77 yr. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and quantify the biogeochemical consequences and subsequent developmental r...
متن کاملDeterminants of flammability in savanna grass species
Tropical grasses fuel the majority of fires on Earth. In fire-prone landscapes, enhanced flammability may be adaptive for grasses via the maintenance of an open canopy and an increase in spatiotemporal opportunities for recruitment and regeneration. In addition, by burning intensely but briefly, high flammability may protect resprouting buds from lethal temperatures. Despite these potential ben...
متن کاملChanges in aboveground primary production and carbon and nitrogen pools accompanying woody plant encroachment in a temperate savanna
When woody plant abundance increases in grasslands and savannas, a phenomenon widely observed worldwide, there is considerable uncertainty as to whether aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and ecosystem carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools increase, decrease, or remain the same. We estimated ANPP and C and N pools in aboveground vegetation and surface soils on shallow clay and clay loam so...
متن کاملEffects of anabolic and catabolic nutrients on woody plant encroachment after long-term experimental fertilization in a South African savanna
The causes of the worldwide problem of encroachment of woody plants into grassy vegetation are elusive. The effects of soil nutrients on competition between herbaceous and woody plants in various landscapes are particularly poorly understood. A long-term experiment of 60 plots in a South African savanna, comprising annual applications of ammonium sulphate (146-1166 kg ha-1 yr-1) and superphosph...
متن کاملWoody overstorey effects on soil carbon and nitrogen pools in South African savanna
Woody plant encroachment in savannas may alter carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools over the longterm, which could have regional or global biogeochemical implications given the widespread encroachment observed in the vast savanna biome. Soil and litter %C and %N were surveyed across four soil types in two encroached, semiarid savanna landscapes in northern South Africa. Litter at sampling points w...
